Broadway bazaar Walk
and Ferry Ride

What this tour is about: If you are charmed by colourful bazaars; if you like discovering local food and culture, you will thoroughly enjoy this exploration of Ernakulam's Broadway area. Broadway is the traditional nerve-centre of business in the city. The area rose into prominence when the British took over control of the Cochin area from the Dutch. Traders moved from Mattanchery to Broadway, setting up shops selling everything under the sun. Today, Broadway continues to be a busy wholesale and retail bazaar, with specialised markets for various products and services.

The Broadway area is also close to one of Cochin’s most popular promenades - Marine Drive. This is a car-free pedestrian zone, with the beautiful backwaters on one side, and shops / cafes on the other. It is very popular with local residents and is a good way to see modern-day life in the city.

Jewish Heritage Tour

Background: According to legend, the history of Kerala’s Jews goes back as far as the time of King Solomon (10th century BC), when trade in exotic items from India such as peacocks, ivory, sandalwood and spices flourished

Many believe that Jews arrived on the Malabar Coast after the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem in 70 CE. Interestingly, the Christian tradition recounts that when St Thomas arrived on the Malabar Coast in the first century, he attended a wedding in Kodungallur (a port town near Cochin, also called Cranganore). He sang a wedding song in Hebrew, which no one understood, except a local Jewish flute girl. This story seems to prove the existence of Jews on the Malabar coast as early as the first century.

Muziris Heritage Tour:
A Confluence of Cultures

What this tour is about: This tour offers an introduction to the many faiths and cultures of the Malabar Coast

Muziris is the name of an ancient port city on the Kerala coast, an hour’s drive north of Cochin. The city traded in spices, silk, and precious stones; with exports to Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc. Enriched by trade contacts, Muziris became a melting pot of world cultures. The earliest Jewish settlers in India landed on the Malabar Coast and flourished in Muziris. Muziris is where St. Thomas the Apostle is said to have first landed in 52AD, bringing Christianity to India. The first ever mosque in India was also built here.
